Hard Water, Well Water and the Marks They Leave

Why shower glass stays cloudy after it has been cleaned, what will remove the deposit, and how to tell when nothing will.

The film on shower glass and fixtures is mineral deposit — calcium and magnesium left behind as water evaporates — not dirt, which is why washing it does nothing. It dissolves with an acidic descaler and time, unless the glass has been etched, in which case the damage is in the surface and no product will remove it.

What the deposit actually is

Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium picked up from rock as groundwater moves through it. When that water evaporates off a surface, the minerals stay behind. What you see on shower glass is not a layer of dirt sitting on top of the glass — it is a crystalline mineral scale bonded to it, and every cleaning product designed to lift dirt will slide straight over it.

This is why the most common complaint about a bathroom clean is that it still looks dirty afterwards. The surfaces were cleaned. The scale was not, because removing scale is a different task using different chemistry, and it takes time that a maintenance visit does not contain.

Deposit or etching — the distinction that decides everything

Two things look identical from three feet away and are not remotely the same problem.

Deposit sits on the surface. It will dissolve in a mild acid — the same reason limescale comes off a kettle. Given enough dwell time it comes off completely and the glass returns to clear.

Etching is damage in the surface itself. Prolonged mineral contact, alkaline cleaners, and abrasive pads all cause it, and on shower glass it is extremely common in bathrooms that have gone years without descaling. Once glass is etched, the cloudiness is the glass. No product removes it, professional or otherwise. It can sometimes be polished out mechanically, which is a glass restoration trade rather than a cleaning one, and on a shower enclosure it is often cheaper to replace the panel.

The practical test is simple: wet the glass. Deposit disappears while wet and reappears as it dries. Etching looks the same wet or dry. Anyone who tells you they can make etched glass clear again is selling you a second disappointment.

Where it shows up first

Scale appears wherever water sits and evaporates rather than running off. In practice that means a predictable list, in roughly the order it becomes visible:

  • Shower glass, especially the lower third where spray pools
  • Tap bases, spouts and the seams around them
  • Shower heads, where flow drops before the scale is obvious
  • The waterline in toilets, and under the rim
  • Tile grout, which is porous and holds deposit deeper than tile does
  • Glass shower doors' metal tracks, where standing water never fully dries
  • Dishwasher interiors and kettle elements

Well water is its own case

Municipal supply is treated and tested to a published standard. A private well is not treated unless the owner treats it, and its hardness depends entirely on the geology it draws from — which is why two properties on the same road can behave differently.

Properties on wells frequently show heavier deposits than nearby homes on municipal supply, and often show iron staining as well: an orange-brown discolouration in toilets, sinks and showers that is a different mineral with different chemistry. Iron staining does not respond to ordinary descalers and needs a product formulated for it.

If a property is on a well and the marks are persistent, the durable answer is at the source rather than the surface. A softener or a whole-house treatment system stops the deposit arriving; cleaning only ever removes what has already arrived.

What removes it, and what quietly destroys the surface underneath

Mineral scale dissolves in acid. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why dwell time matters more than pressure — the acid needs contact time to work, and scrubbing harder is mostly a way to scratch things.

The important caution is that the surface underneath decides what is safe:

  • Glass, ceramic tile and most modern taps tolerate acidic descalers well
  • Natural stone — marble, travertine, limestone — is calcium carbonate, so an acid dissolves the stone itself. Vinegar on a marble surround causes permanent etching, and this is the single most common way a well-intentioned deep clean does real damage
  • Unlacquered brass, some finishes on bronze and older chrome plating can discolour
  • Abrasive pads on glass leave fine scratches that hold the next deposit better than clean glass did, making the problem worse every cycle

Keeping it from coming back

Scale is a function of water sitting on a surface and evaporating. Anything that shortens that window works, and nothing that does not shorten it works for long.

A squeegee on the glass after the last shower of the day is the highest-leverage habit available and takes about fifteen seconds. Ventilating so the room dries rather than staying humid is second. Beyond that it is a question of interval: a surface descaled every few months never accumulates enough to become difficult, while one descaled every few years may already be etched by the time anyone gets to it.

Short answers

Can hard water stains be removed permanently?

The deposit can be removed completely, but it will return as long as the water is hard — cleaning treats the symptom. A water softener or whole-house treatment system treats the cause. If the surface has been etched rather than coated, the cloudiness is damage in the glass and cannot be cleaned off at all.

Will vinegar remove hard water stains?

On glass, ceramic tile and most modern fixtures, yes — it is a mild acid and it works given enough dwell time. Never use it on marble, travertine or limestone: those stones are calcium carbonate and an acid dissolves them, leaving permanent dull patches. That mistake is common and it is not reversible.

Why does my shower still look dirty right after it was cleaned?

Almost always because the problem is mineral scale rather than dirt. Cleaning products lift soil; they do not dissolve minerals. A bathroom can be genuinely clean and still read as dirty until the scale is treated as its own task.
